Chapter 13 - Warren Lost the Person He Expected to Defend Him
The hardest consequence for Warren was not legal.
It was Preston.
For years, father and son had a complicated but loyal relationship.
Preston defended him.
Excused him.
Explained him.
After speaking with Evelyn, that stopped.
During one family therapy session, Warren said:
“I raised you to protect this family.”
Preston answered:
“You raised me to protect you from consequences.”
Warren went silent.
Preston continued.
“When Mom left, you made me choose your version of her.”
“She abandoned us.”
“She escaped you.”
Warren stood up.
The therapist asked him to sit.
He left instead.
For the first time in thirty years, Preston did not follow.
That did not make Preston healed.
It did mean the generational chain finally cracked somewhere.
Sometimes progress is not reconciliation.
