Chapter 14 - Giulietta Went Back to the Bridal Room One Last Time
Six months later, Giulietta returned to the estate where the wedding had ended.
Not because she missed Preston.
The estate belonged to a family friend who had stored several personal items left after the cancellation.
One box remained in the bridal room.
Her veil.
Shoes.
A small makeup case.
Nothing important.
Still, walking into that room made her body remember.
The chandelier.
Vanity.
Burgundy sofa.
Then the empty place where the garment rack had stood.
The wall had been repaired.
The golf club was long gone into evidence storage and later returned through proper legal channels.
Giulietta stood at the vanity.
That was where she had removed the engagement ring.
She touched the polished surface.
For months people asked when she knew the relationship was over.
They expected her to say:
When he swung.
But the truth was earlier.
The moment Preston told her:
My father used this to teach my mother obedience.
That sentence carried an expectation.
Not merely a threat.
Preston wanted Giulietta to understand that marriage came with a hierarchy.
She declined it before the club ever moved.
The ring on the vanity was her answer.
