Chapter 9 - Evelyn Finally Told Preston What Warren Had Done to Her
Preston had spent his childhood believing his mother left because she was unstable.
That was Warren’s version.
Evelyn suffered anxiety.
True.
She had panic attacks.
True.
She spent several weeks in treatment after leaving the marriage.
Also true.
Warren used those facts to rewrite cause and effect.
He told Preston:
“Your mother was sick, and marriage was too much for her.”
What Preston never heard:
Her anxiety became severe while living under constant intimidation.
Evelyn finally agreed to speak with him after the wedding incident.
Mother and son met with a therapist present.
Preston asked:
“Did Dad ever hit you?”
Evelyn answered carefully.
“With his hand? Once.”
Preston looked stunned.
“With the club?”
“No.”
“Then why did I remember—”
“He hit things beside me.”
Silence.
“He wanted me to know he could hit me.”
That distinction finally made Preston understand his own words in the bridal bedroom.
He had raised the club toward Giulietta.
Maybe part of him believed he never intended contact.
It did not matter.
The threat itself was the point.
