Chapter 12 - Preston Apologized Before He Understood What an Apology Was
His first letter arrived nine days later.
Six pages.
Giulietta read two.
Most of it was about Preston.
His childhood.
His fear.
His father.
His humiliation.
His love for her.
His devastation.
He wrote:
I became someone I didn’t recognize.
Giulietta stopped there.
She did recognize him.
That was the problem.
Not the golf-club version alone.
The controlling comments.
The financial pressure.
The expectation that marriage would change her boundaries.
The anger when she publicly disagreed.
The swing was an escalation.
Not a transformation into a stranger.
Months later, after treatment, Preston wrote again.
This time the letter was shorter.
I threatened you because I believed fear could restore control. I learned that from my father, but I chose to use it. Those are separate facts.
Giulietta finished that letter.
She did not return to him.
