Chapter 11 - The Wedding Was Canceled Before Anyone Invented a Better Story
Giulietta did not go downstairs.
Did not finish photographs.
Did not make an announcement from the staircase.
Her father handled guests.
One sentence:
“There will be no wedding celebration tonight due to a serious private matter.”
That was enough.
Vendors were paid.
Gifts returned.
The venue was cleared.
Giulietta changed out of her dress inside another room with her sister and cousin present.
The white gown went into a garment bag.
The engagement ring stayed with Preston’s attorney until its ownership was settled.
No dramatic throwing it into a fountain.
No public destruction.
Giulietta wanted the marriage ended, not converted into spectacle.
Preston left the estate separately.
Warren tried to leave with him.
Thomas stopped Warren only long enough to confirm that investigators had already requested the golf club remain untouched as potential evidence.
Warren looked at him.
“You’ve been waiting years for this.”
Thomas answered:
“No, Mr. Hale. I hoped I’d never see the same story again.”
