Chapter 5 - Warren’s Fear Had Nothing to Do with the Wedding

Giulietta wanted to know why Warren turned pale when he saw the Marconi security men.

The answer came from one of them.

His name was Thomas Avery.

Fifty-one.

Former state investigator.

Now regional security director for Marconi Protective Services.

When Giulietta asked:

“Do you know Warren?”

Thomas hesitated.

“I know of him.”

“From what?”

He checked with the company attorney before answering.

Seventeen years earlier, Thomas had worked for a private investigations firm contracted by Evelyn Hale’s divorce counsel.

Not Marconi then.

Different company.

Same investigator.

Thomas interviewed hotel staff, country-club employees, and household workers regarding Warren’s intimidation and destruction of property.

He also obtained photographs of the damaged bedroom wall.

The golf-club incident.

That evidence helped Evelyn secure a protective temporary arrangement during divorce proceedings.

The case later settled confidentially.

Warren had not seen Thomas since.

Until the wedding.

That was why he froze.

Not because Thomas threatened him.

Because Thomas was living evidence of a history Warren had spent nearly two decades reducing to “a bitter divorce.”

And now Thomas was standing behind the woman Preston had just threatened with the same kind of weapon.

The pattern had crossed generations.

Warren knew exactly what it looked like.
