Chapter 7 - The Engagement Ring Was Giulietta’s First Decision

People later obsessed over the punch.

Giulietta did not.

To her, the most important thing she did in that room happened before Preston swung.

She removed the ring.

Placed it on the vanity.

That was the moment she stopped negotiating with the future he wanted.

Preston noticed too.

During an interview later, he said:

“When she took off the ring, I knew she was humiliating me.”

Not:

I knew she was afraid.

Not:

I knew the relationship was ending.

Humiliating me.

His focus remained his status.

His rejection.

His loss of control.

That understanding helped Giulietta stop wondering whether she had somehow provoked the attack by being too defiant.

Preston saw autonomy as defiance.
