Chapter 1 - The USB Raised From the Floor

I heard my daughter scream before I saw what was happening.

When I rushed into the ironing room, Elara was already crying in the gold-trimmed bassinet beside the ironing board, her tiny pink hand flailing helplessly in the air. Meredith stood over her with the electric iron in her hand—and before my brain could even catch up, she pressed the hot plate down against my baby’s skin.

A sharp hiss tore through the room.

Elara’s scream cut straight through me.

I didn’t think. I moved.

I drove my foot as hard as I could into Meredith’s arm. The iron flew out of her hand, smashed against the wall hard enough to crack the plaster, then dropped onto a white cloth on the floor. Smoke immediately began curling up from the cloth.

Meredith turned toward me, eyes full of spite instead of shock.

“She needs to learn a lesson.”

For one second, I could barely breathe.

Then I shoved past her and snatched Elara out of the bassinet. The moment I saw the fresh red mark on my daughter’s hand, my whole body went cold. Elara buried her face weakly against my shoulder, crying in little broken bursts that sounded worse than screaming.

“Oh God—baby!”

Behind me, Meredith regained her balance faster than I expected. Before I could turn fully, her palm cracked across my face.

The slap staggered me sideways, but I never loosened my grip on Elara.

At that exact moment, the ironing-room door flew open.

Caleb rushed in.

He stopped dead when he saw me holding Elara, smoke rising from the cloth on the floor, Meredith standing nearby with one hand still raised.

Meredith reacted instantly. She pointed straight at me, her voice changing from vicious to breathless panic so smoothly it made me sick.

“She’s lost it—she hurt Elara!”

Caleb didn’t hesitate.

He rushed toward me, ripped Elara out of my arms, and pulled our daughter tightly against his chest.

“What have you done?!”

I opened my mouth to answer, but he didn’t wait for one.

Still holding Elara with one arm, he drove his foot into my stomach so hard it knocked the air out of me. I flew backward into the wooden clothing rack.

The whole thing crashed down over me in a storm of hanging clothes, folded shirts, and splintering wood.

For a few seconds, all I could do was gasp.

Then I forced my shaking hand inside my shirt.

I pulled out the small USB drive I had hidden there.

Every muscle in my body screamed as I lifted it toward Caleb.

“Look at this first.”

He froze.

And for the first time since he’d entered the room, Meredith stopped acting.

Her face drained of color.

Her eyes darted upward toward the little black security camera above the door.

That was when Caleb finally understood that whatever was on the USB was something Meredith had just remembered too late.
