Chapter 8 - The USB Did Not Just Hold the Attack—It Held the Plan

I told Caleb to open the second folder.

His face looked gray by then, but he obeyed.

The next clip was from the side entrance two nights earlier. It showed Caleb opening the door just after midnight. Meredith stepped inside carrying a slim leather tote. He kissed her immediately.

Caleb shut his eyes for a moment.

“Keep going,” I said.

The next clip mattered more.

It was audio from the study—poor quality, but clear enough.

Meredith’s voice:

“She’s almost done. Once you stop hesitating, this house can finally breathe.”

Caleb answered:

“Not while June still has standing with the family trust.”

Then Meredith again:

“Then make her look unstable. Nobody will question where the baby goes if you say she isn’t safe.”

My knees nearly gave out even though I was already standing still.

I had heard that clip once while testing exports and nearly vomited.

Now Caleb had to hear it too.

He looked physically sick.

The clip continued.

“She gets emotional,” Meredith said. “Use that. One incident in front of staff, one doctor saying postpartum exhaustion, and you’ll have leverage.”

The file ended.

Silence filled the ironing room.

Even Meredith had stopped trying to interrupt.

Because there it was—the full shape of it.

Not just an affair.

Not just cruelty.

A plan.

Meredith wanted me discredited, isolated, and eventually pushed out of my own home. Caleb had not sounded enthusiastic in the clip, but he had stayed in the room. He had not stopped her. He had discussed logistics.

That was enough.

I looked straight at him.

“You were going to let her paint me as unfit and take my daughter from me.”

He didn’t deny it.

He didn’t really have language left for denial.

He just stared at the screen, still holding the child he had failed twice in the same minute.
