Chapter 11 - Meredith Was Charged, But Caleb Was Not Saved by Regret

A lot of people think one dramatic reveal fixes the moral balance of a story.
It doesn’t.
Truth restores clarity. It does not erase damage.
Meredith was charged quickly—child abuse, assault, unlawful tampering with security footage, and conspiracy-related counts once the audio and digital records were fully reviewed.
What happened with Caleb was slower.
More complicated.
Harder.
He had not burned Elara.
He had not deleted every file.
He had not devised the full strategy.
But he had participated in enough of it—and acted violently enough in that room—that regret could not wash him clean.
My attorney filed for emergency separation the next morning.
By then Elara’s burn had been assessed as painful but limited, exactly as the doctor hoped because the contact had been brief and I had interrupted it quickly. That was the only mercy in the entire nightmare.
Caleb came to the hospital twice.
I refused to see him the first time.
The second time, I allowed it because I wanted him to hear me once without interruption.
He stood near the doorway of my room, pale and sleepless.
“I never meant for any of this to happen.”
I looked down at Elara sleeping against my chest.
“That sentence means nothing to me anymore.”
He swallowed.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t. Because if you knew, you wouldn’t say it like it matters.”
He took the hit without defending himself.
I went on.
“You let her into my home. You let her near my child. You listened to her talk about making me look unfit. Then when she hurt our daughter, you kicked me.”
He had no answer.
For the first time, I didn’t need one.

Because my future no longer depended on whether he could explain himself.
