Chapter 9 - Meredith Finally Told the Truth for the Most Selfish Reason Possible

People imagine confession comes from guilt.
Usually it comes from fear.
Meredith realized the security footage, the study audio, and the recovered deleted clips together were enough to destroy the careful image she had built. She changed tactics immediately.
She turned on Caleb.
“Fine,” she snapped. “You want the truth? I did what neither of you had the nerve to do.”
I kept my eyes on Elara.
Caleb stared at her.
Meredith lifted her chin, though panic was beginning to crack her poise.
“She was never going to leave, Caleb. She was never going to hand you the life you wanted. She still had your name, your house, your daughter, your family’s respect. So yes—I pushed.”
“You burned a baby,” I said quietly.
“She’d heal.”
The words hung in the room like poison.
Caleb actually stepped backward from her then.
Not because of me.
Not because of the affair.
Because that was the first time he heard Meredith describe my daughter as disposable.
Meredith must have realized it too, because she immediately tried to soften. “I only needed a mark. Something small. Something that would make it look chaotic when you walked in—”
Caleb flinched.
He looked down at Elara as if he might drop to the floor under the weight of what he was hearing.
“She’s ten months old,” he said.
Meredith’s composure slipped further. “And June would still have had the blame! That was the point.”
There it was.
The rawest version of her motive.
Not rage.
Not jealousy alone.
Erasure.
If I was branded dangerous, she could step neatly into my place.
May you like
What she hadn’t predicted was that I would already have the house telling the truth for me.
