Chapter 4 - Meredith Didn’t Want Caleb’s Love—She Wanted My Place

Affairs are ugly enough when they’re just affairs.

This wasn’t just that.

Meredith didn’t act like a woman sneaking around with a married man out of passion. She acted like someone rehearsing for a role she already believed belonged to her.

She corrected staff in my home.

Rearranged items in Elara’s nursery.

Once she moved framed baby photos of my daughter from the family room to a side hall and said she thought the room looked “less cluttered.”

She smiled while she said it.

Another time, when Caleb stepped away to take a call, Meredith looked down at Elara in her high chair and said softly, “Some children are born into the right family at the wrong time.”

I looked at her sharply. She just smiled and sipped her coffee.

The more I watched, the clearer it became: she wasn’t trying to fit into the edges of my life. She was trying to imagine life after me.

That was the part I couldn’t afford to dismiss.

I began noticing how often Caleb defended her without hearing me out. If she said I was tired, he said I needed rest. If she said I was overreacting, he said I’d always been emotional under stress. If I said I didn’t want her around Elara alone, he called me paranoid.

I wish I could say he became cruel overnight.

He didn’t.

What he became was weak first.

And weakness, in the wrong hands, becomes cruelty very quickly.

I started sleeping lighter. Locking doors more carefully. Carrying my phone from room to room. Backing up every clip I could save.

I didn’t yet know what Meredith wanted to do.

May you like

I only knew she wanted me replaced so badly that she had stopped hiding it from me.
