Chapter 14 - The Day Meredith Finally Spoke in Court, No One Believed She Had Ever Loved Anyone

Meredith pleaded not guilty at first.

By the preliminary hearing, that strategy was already collapsing.

The footage was too clear.

The audio too precise.

The pattern too well documented.

Her attorney tried to suggest emotional instability, confusion in the moment, and a misunderstanding of camera angles. Then the prosecution played the clip of her saying, “She’d heal.”

The courtroom changed after that.

Even the judge’s expression hardened.

When Meredith finally testified in her own defense, she made the mistake I had half-expected and fully dreaded: she tried to make herself the victim of loving Caleb too much.

She claimed he had promised her a future.

Claimed I had “provoked a toxic dynamic.”

Claimed she had only wanted “a life that should have been hers.”

The prosecutor asked one simple question:

“At what point did that imagined life justify pressing a hot iron onto a ten-month-old child’s hand?”

Meredith said nothing.

That silence mattered more than anything else she had said all day.

Caleb testified too.

He admitted the affair.

Admitted the study conversation.

Admitted deleting footage at Meredith’s request before he understood how much had been saved elsewhere.

And admitted kicking me.

His testimony did not redeem him.

It did, however, keep the truth from being buried under one more layer of cowardice.

By the end of that hearing, the court granted me full temporary physical custody of Elara, heavily restricted Caleb’s contact pending further review, and formalized orders keeping Meredith far away from us.

I walked out with my lawyer and felt, for the first time in weeks, like the floor beneath me belonged to me again.
