Chapter 3 - I Had Started Saving Evidence Two Weeks Earlier

The USB didn’t exist because I was clever.

It existed because I was desperate.

For months, Meredith had been around my house under one polished excuse after another. At first, she was supposedly helping with a charitable event Caleb sponsored. Then she was consulting on nursery décor, estate scheduling, staffing, guest planning—whatever role gave her a reason to appear wherever I was.

She always arrived calm.

Well dressed.

Helpful in front of other people.

And somehow cruelest when no one else could hear.

At first I thought it was simple dislike. Then I thought it was jealousy. I was wrong about both.

It was strategy.

Two weeks before the incident in the ironing room, I went downstairs late at night to get Elara’s teething medicine. I found Meredith in Caleb’s study with the door half-open.

She was sitting on the edge of his desk.

Caleb was standing between her knees.

His hand was in her hair.

I didn’t need to hear anything after that. I already knew what I was seeing.

Neither of them noticed me.

I backed away before they could.

I remember going upstairs, standing over Elara’s crib, and realizing my marriage had been ending long before I caught them. That scene hadn’t created the betrayal. It had just finally given it a face.

The next morning, Caleb acted normal.

Meredith arrived for lunch like nothing had happened.

And that was when I understood something worse than the affair itself:

They believed I knew nothing.

That gave me one advantage.

So instead of confronting them, I started watching.

I checked security logs.

Copied door-camera clips.

Saved message screenshots when I could access the family tablet Caleb had carelessly synced to the home network.

And when I discovered that several indoor security clips had been deleted from the main server—but were still recoverable from local cache backups—I copied those too.

That USB became my insurance policy.

By the day Meredith burned my daughter, it held far more than one camera clip.

May you like

It held the whole pattern.
