Chapter 7 - Caleb’s Worst Sin Was Not the Affair—It Was How Ready He Was to Believe Me Guilty

When people talk about betrayal, they usually picture the other woman.

I did too.

Until that day.

Because yes, Meredith hurt my child. But Caleb looked at me holding our screaming daughter and chose to believe her.

Not because the evidence pointed there.

Not because he’d thought it through.

Because believing Meredith was easier than questioning everything he’d done.

The footage forced him to watch his own failure in brutal sequence: his mistress harming his child, his wife saving the baby, his mistress striking his wife, and then himself kicking the wrong person while holding the daughter he was supposed to protect.

When the clip ended, he stood unmoving for several seconds.

Then he whispered, almost to himself, “No.”

I pushed myself fully upright, though my stomach still felt like it had been torn open.

“Yes.”

He turned toward me slowly, Elara still in his arms. She was quieter now, too exhausted to scream. Nurse-like instinct took over in me despite everything.

“She needs cold water on the burn and a doctor now.”

Caleb looked down at Elara’s little hand as if seeing it for the first time.

Meredith stepped forward with trembling urgency. “Caleb, she set this up. She’s been spying on us. She knew the camera—”

His head snapped toward her.

“Us?”

That one word landed like a falling blade.

I watched Meredith realize she had said too much.

Caleb stared at her, then back at the screen, then finally at me.

And in that instant, I knew the affair would no longer be the lie he could hide behind.

Because his true horror wasn’t just that Meredith had burned Elara.

It was that I had evidence of how long he had been standing beside the wrong woman.
