Chapter 6 - The Ironing Room Was Where Meredith Tried to Turn My Daughter Into a Weapon

Three days before the attack, I walked into the ironing room unexpectedly and found Meredith standing beside the bassinet, staring down at Elara while the baby slept.

No iron in her hand. No obvious danger. But something in the stillness of that moment chilled me.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

She turned with perfect calm.

“Checking on her.”

“In the laundry room?”

“She was crying. I didn’t want to wake you.”

It sounded plausible enough that anyone else might have accepted it.

I didn’t.

I picked Elara up and left without another word.

That night I checked the footage and saw Meredith had stood there for nearly four minutes before I walked in. She hadn’t touched Elara then. She had just looked at her with a flat, unreadable expression.

The next morning I confronted Caleb—not about the affair, not yet, but about Meredith being alone with our daughter.

He sighed in irritation.

“June, she was helping.”

“Helping with what?”

“You’re turning everything into a threat.”

That sentence told me exactly how deeply Meredith’s influence had sunk in.

So I changed tactics.

If he wouldn’t listen to warning, he would eventually have to listen to proof.

From that moment on, I carried the USB in the lining of my blouse whenever Meredith was in the house. I didn’t know when I would need it. I only knew the danger was closer now.

On the day everything exploded, I had taken a basket of folded linens to the upstairs hall for less than two minutes. Elara had been awake in the bassinet. I heard her first cry just as I reached the linen cabinet.

Then I heard the hiss.

I will never forget the sound.

Meredith hadn’t lashed out in spontaneous anger. She had chosen her moment. Chosen the room. Chosen the child.

And when Caleb walked in, she was ready to turn my baby’s pain into a weapon against me.
