Chapter 5 - The Security Camera Above the Door Was Never Just Decoration

Our house had cameras almost everywhere except bedrooms and bathrooms.

That included the hallway outside the ironing room and a small black camera mounted above the ironing-room door itself. Caleb had insisted on the system after a series of package thefts in the neighborhood two years earlier. I used to feel safer because of it.

Then I noticed something strange.

Certain clips were missing.

Not all of them. That would have been obvious.

Just short, specific windows of time.

Four minutes in the nursery.

Three minutes in the upstairs hall.

Two minutes by the rear terrace doors.

At first, I assumed a system bug. Then I checked access logs and saw manual deletion requests from the house admin account.

Only two people had full admin privileges: Caleb and me.

I had not deleted anything.

Which meant Caleb had, or someone using his credentials had.

I didn’t confront him—not yet. I was still trying to understand the scope of what was happening. Instead, I contacted the security installer under the excuse of a maintenance check. The technician quietly told me the local device temporarily retained deleted footage until the memory cycled over. He showed me how to export it.

That was when the camera system stopped being a comfort and became evidence.

One recovered clip showed Meredith alone in Elara’s nursery, lifting a pink cashmere blanket and smiling to herself before placing it into a donation box that was supposed to go to guest rooms.

Another showed her in the upstairs hallway outside my bedroom late at night, listening at the door.

Another showed Caleb letting her in through the side entrance after midnight when he thought I was asleep.

I copied everything.

Then I started watching the camera above the ironing room more closely, because Meredith had developed a habit of disappearing there when she knew I was bathing Elara or putting laundry away.

I began to suspect the room mattered to her for a reason.
