Chapter 3 - The Broken Mentor

Dr. Arnold raised one trembling hand, covering his mouth as if he were trying to physically hold back a sob. The sheer, overwhelming grief radiating from the tall doctor sent a shockwave of terror straight through Sarah's body.

"Sarah..." Dr. Arnold whispered, his voice cracking violently in the busy hallway. "You... you came here for Ben?"

Sarah couldn't speak. She stared at him in growing terror. The ambient noise of the busy emergency department seemed to fade into a loud, ringing silence. Dr. Arnold looked at Sarah’s innocent, confused face, desperately fighting back the tears streaming down his own cheeks.

He slowly lowered his trembling hand. He looked directly into Sarah's frightened eyes.

"He hasn't told you anything, has he?" Dr. Arnold asked, his voice quiet and utterly broken.

Sarah shook her head frantically. "Told me what? Arnold, please, where is he?! Did he get into an accident? Is he in surgery?!"

Dr. Arnold took a slow, agonizing step forward. He gently reached out and placed his hands over Sarah's, feeling the crinkle of the brown paper bag she was clutching.

"Sarah," Dr. Arnold said, tears spilling over his eyelashes. "Ben isn't a resident here anymore. He hasn't worked a shift in this hospital for six months."
