Chapter 4 - The Devastating Diagnosis

The hospital corridor began to spin around Sarah. Her knees felt weak. She stumbled backward slightly, but Dr. Arnold held onto her arms to keep her steady.
"That's impossible," Sarah whispered, her chest heaving with rapid, panicked breaths. "He leaves the house at 5:00 AM every single morning. He comes home exhausted. He wears his scrubs! What do you mean he hasn't worked here?!"
Dr. Arnold swallowed hard, wiping the tears from his face. "He comes here, Sarah. But not to work."
Dr. Arnold gently guided Sarah away from the staring nurses, leading her through a heavy glass door into an empty, private consultation room. He closed the door, shutting out the chaos of the ER.
"Six months ago, Ben collapsed during a surgical rotation," Dr. Arnold explained, his voice thick with sorrow. "We ran scans. We did a full biopsy. Sarah... Ben has Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. It's incredibly aggressive. It had already metastasized by the time we found it."
The brown paper bag slipped from Sarah’s hands. It hit the linoleum floor with a soft thud.
"No," Sarah gasped, shaking her head violently. "No, he would have told me! We tell each other everything!"
