Chapter 6 - The Woman by the Bed

The heavy, magnetic doors of the ICU slid open with a soft hiss. The atmosphere here was entirely different—dimly lit, quiet, and filled with the terrifying, rhythmic beeping of life support machines.
Dr. Arnold led Sarah to Room 412. He stopped outside the glass window, unable to go inside. He gestured for Sarah to enter.
Sarah pushed the heavy door open.
Ben lay in the center of the room, looking impossibly small and fragile in the massive hospital bed. He was pale, connected to a dozen IV lines, his eyes closed in a deep, unnatural sleep. The sight of him absolutely shattered Sarah’s heart.
But as she took a step toward the bed, a woman suddenly stood up from a chair in the corner of the room.
She was in her late 20s, wearing an expensive black trench coat and holding a designer handbag. She had been holding Ben’s hand.
"Excuse me," the strange woman whispered sharply, crossing her arms. "This is a private room. Only immediate family is allowed in here."
Sarah froze, the grief in her chest suddenly colliding with a massive wall of pure confusion.
