Chapter 2 - The Hallway Standoff

The blonde nurse stared at the brown paper lunch bag in Sarah's hands as if it were a live bomb. She nervously glanced over her shoulder toward her colleague, a brunette nurse in navy-blue scrubs who had just frozen mid-step. Both women exchanged a look of pure, unadulterated panic.
Sarah’s hopeful smile completely disappeared. The warm anticipation in her chest was instantly replaced by a cold, heavy dread. Her natural micro-expressions shifted from joy to sheer confusion.
"Ma'am..." the blonde nurse stammered, visibly struggling to maintain any professional composure. Her voice shook. "Please... you need to speak to Dr. Arnold."
"What's wrong?" Sarah asked, her voice cracking slightly as she clutched the lunch bag tighter against her chest. "Where's my husband? Is Ben hurt?"
Before the nurse could answer, heavy footsteps echoed down the polished corridor.
Dr. Arnold approached. He was a tall, handsome man in his early 40s with short dark brown hair, wearing light blue medical scrubs and a black stethoscope. He was Ben’s mentor, the man who had overseen Ben’s entire residency. Sarah knew him well.
But as Dr. Arnold walked toward the nurses' station, he abruptly stopped dead in his tracks. He saw Sarah holding the brown paper lunch bag.
