Chapter 5 - The ICU Doors

Sarah fell into one of the plastic consultation chairs, completely paralyzed by the sheer magnitude of the lie. The late nights. The exhaustion. The weight loss. Ben had blamed it all on the stress of his residency. But he wasn't working. He was undergoing brutal, agonizing chemotherapy entirely alone, just so she wouldn't have to carry the burden of his pain.
"Where is he?" Sarah demanded, standing up abruptly, her tears finally breaking free. "I need to see him. Right now."
Dr. Arnold didn't move toward the door. He looked down at the floor, his broad shoulders shaking.
"Sarah..." Dr. Arnold whispered. "Ben was admitted to the intensive care unit three days ago. The chemotherapy stopped working. The tumors have completely taken over his liver. He slipped into a hepatic coma last night."
Sarah let out a visceral, agonizing scream that echoed through the small consultation room.
The man she loved, the man she had just made an apple pie for, was dying in a hospital bed just down the hall, and she had spent the last three days thinking he was just pulling double shifts.
"Take me to him," Sarah ordered, her voice vibrating with a terrifying, desperate strength. "Now."
