Chapter 8 - The Hidden Envelope
Sarah walked slowly toward the small closet in the corner of the ICU room. Her hands were shaking, not from grief anymore, but from a blinding, righteous fury. She opened the small locker where Ben’s personal belongings had been stored when he collapsed three days ago.
Sitting on top of his folded clothes was his expensive leather briefcase.
Sarah didn't hesitate. She popped the latches and opened it right in front of Chloe.
Inside, tucked beneath a stack of fake medical charts he had used to lie to Sarah, was a thick, sealed manila envelope. Written on the front in Ben’s handwriting were the words: For Chloe. In the event of my passing.
Sarah ripped the envelope open.
Inside was a legally binding, recently updated Last Will and Testament.
Sarah scanned the first page, her blood running completely cold. Ben had secretly transferred all of his liquid assets, his massive life insurance policy, and the deed to their shared summer home directly into a private trust. And the sole beneficiary of that trust wasn't his wife of three years.
It was Chloe.
