Chapter 3 - The Innocent Witness

Adrian slowly stood up, brushing the ash off his black shirt. He gently helped little Elsie stand back up on the stone promenade, completely ignoring the blazing inferno just fifty yards away.

A tight, cinematic close-up captured Adrian’s face. The fierce, untouchable mafia exterior completely melted away. He looked down at the five-year-old girl in the pink lace dress with an expression of profound, earth-shattering gratitude and pure shock.

"How did you know, Elsie?" Adrian asked, his voice a low, intense rumble that barely cut through the crackling flames.

Elsie didn't look scared. Her face was full of serious, undeniable determination.

"I saw the bad man," Elsie stated bravely, her small hands balled into fists. "He didn't have a mop. He had a heavy black box with a red light. He put it near the loud engines and ran away. I tried to tell the captain, but he told me to go play."

Adrian stopped breathing. The air in his lungs violently turned to absolute ice.

He didn't just have a mechanical failure on his yacht. He had a highly coordinated, inside-job assassination attempt. Someone had breached his absolute, impenetrable security perimeter. Someone had paid off the marina staff.
