Chapter 5 - The Locked Doors

Vanessa stumbled backward, her designer heels catching on the carpet. “What… what are you talking about, Dominic? It was an accident! The doctors confirmed it!”
Dominic raised his left hand and snapped his fingers once.
The sound was like a gunshot in the silent room. Instantly, the warm theatrical lighting in the ballroom shifted, plunging the audience into a dim, ominous glow. At all four exits of the grand hall, Dominic’s heavily armed, loyal enforcers stepped out from the shadows. The heavy oak doors were pulled shut, and the distinct, terrifying sound of heavy deadbolts sliding into place echoed through the room.
No one was leaving.
Marco panicked, instinctively reaching inside his dark suit jacket for his weapon. But before his fingers could even touch the metal, two massive guards materialized behind him, violently grabbing his arms and forcing him to his knees right in front of the stage.
“Hey! Get off me!” Marco shouted, his tough-guy facade completely crumbling. “Vanessa, tell them to let me go!”
“Dominic, you’re scaring Lily!” Vanessa shrieked, desperately trying to use the little girl as a human shield.
But Lily wasn't scared. She sat calmly in her purple wheelchair, her hands folded neatly in her lap, watching the adults with an intelligence far beyond her six years.
