Chapter 2 - The Broken Apron

The cinematic realism of the suffocating, paralyzing tension gripped the entire dining room. The wealthy patrons sitting at the surrounding tables completely stopped eating, their forks hovering in mid-air as they watched the brutal public execution of the young staff member.

Sophie looked entirely defeated. She stared down at the polished, expensive hardwood floor, her shoulders slumping heavily as the crushing weight of the humiliation threatened to break her spirit.

To understand the sheer, agonizing panic exploding in Sophie’s chest, one had to know her reality. She desperately needed this job. She was the sole provider for her younger sister, who was currently drowning in college tuition debt, and Sophie was already two months behind on her own rent. Losing this position meant absolute, undeniable financial ruin.

"Okay," Sophie whispered quietly, her voice cracking with raw, unfiltered emotional agony.

Her hands trembled uncontrollably as she reached behind her back. She slowly began to untie the thick strings of her black apron. Every single second felt like a lifetime. She was supposed to let the apron fall, turn around, walk out the heavy glass doors, and disappear into the cold, unforgiving city streets in complete and total disgrace.

She let the black fabric slip from her fingers. It pooled pathetically onto the hardwood floor.

But as Sophie turned to leave, a single tear escaped her eye. She blinked it away, lifting her chin to maintain whatever tiny shred of dignity she had left. And as she raised her head, her dark, tear-filled eyes locked directly onto Adrien.

👉 Sophie expected the billionaire to look away in pity, but his cold, unblinking stare ignited a lethal fire in her veins.
