Chapter 2 - The Fierce Protector

The manager stumbled backward, his grip slipping from the toddler's arm. He gasped in outrage, adjusting his black suit. "What the hell is wrong with you, Sarah?! You're fired!"

The waitress didn't even look at him. She immediately crouched down on the wet marble floor, right next to the puddle of spilled milk and shattered glass. She pulled the sobbing toddler behind her, using her own body as a physical shield.

"Nobody touches him unless he wants it," the waitress snarled, her voice fierce and vibrating with a primal, protective instinct.

The dining room went completely silent. The wealthy guests stared in absolute shock at the young woman defying her boss.

The tall man in the black suit had stopped in his tracks just a few feet away. He stood completely frozen in the aisle, watching the scene unfold with an incredible, intense focus. He didn't intervene. He just watched the way the waitress hovered over the terrified child.

The toddler, still trembling violently, slowly peeked out from behind the waitress's white button-up shirt. He looked down at the broken glass of milk, his chest heaving with deep, jagged sniffs. He expected to be yelled at. He expected to be hit.

Instead, the waitress stayed crouched on the hard floor. She didn't grab him. She didn't force him to look at her. She simply held her hands out, palms up, offering a safe, quiet space.

Then, something impossible happened.
