Chapter 6 - The Golden Locket

Sarah looked down at the broken glass. She didn't want to answer. She was terrified of overstepping. But looking into the desperate, heartbroken eyes of a father who just heard his son speak for the first time in six months, she knew she couldn't lie.

Slowly, Sarah reached a trembling hand to the collar of her white button-up shirt. She pulled out a delicate, tarnished gold locket that rested against her chest.

She opened the small clasp. Inside the locket, there was no picture. Instead, it played a tiny, incredibly faint, tinkling melody. A very specific, obscure classical lullaby.

Arthur stopped breathing.

His eyes widened in absolute shock. That lullaby... it was the exact song his late wife used to hum to their son every single night before she died.

"Where did you get that?" Arthur choked out, his chest heaving with suppressed emotion.

Sarah quickly closed the locket, tears spilling down her cheeks. "I was a nursing student, Mr. Vance. Six months ago, I was doing my clinical rotations in the ICU at St. Jude's Hospital."

Arthur’s blood turned to ice. That was the hospital where his wife had spent her final days after the crash.

"I was assigned to your wife's room," Sarah cried softly, her voice cracking. "I was there on her final night. You had gone home to get your son some clothes. She knew she wasn't going to make it."

Arthur covered his mouth with his hand, completely paralyzed by the revelation.

"She gave me this locket," Sarah whispered. "She told me she couldn't bear the thought of her little boy forgetting the sound of her song. She made me promise that if I ever saw him... I would play it for him."
