Chapter 3 - A Single Word

The little boy gently placed his small, trembling fingers into the palm of the waitress's hand.
The waitress looked down at the tiny hand resting in hers. Her tough, fierce exterior completely melted away. Her eyes instantly filled with hot, heavy tears.
"Don't go," the toddler whispered, his soft, crying voice carrying clearly in the dead silent restaurant.
The tall man in the background flinched as if he had been physically struck. His chest stopped moving. His dark, handsome face went completely pale.
He stared at the back of the toddler's head. Then, his eyes slowly moved up to the blonde waitress. The intense, blinding anger that had consumed him just moments ago completely evaporated, replaced by a profound, agonizing shock.
Tears suddenly welled up in the tall man's dark eyes.
"Six months..." the tall man whispered, his voice trembling with a heavy, crushing emotion. "Not once."
An extreme close-up captured the tall man's face. His jaw trembled. A single, heavy tear escaped his eye and fell slowly down his cheek.
The shot cut briefly to the toddler's small hand, holding tightly onto the waitress's finger. It was a subtle, powerful emotional pause.
For six long, agonizing months since the tragic car accident that took his wife's life, the tall man—Arthur Vance—had not heard his traumatized son speak a single word. His little boy had been completely mute, locked inside his own grief.
