Chapter 7 - The Promise Kept

The upscale restaurant faded away. The wealthy guests, the crystal chandeliers, the spilled milk—it all completely vanished. For Arthur, the only thing that existed in the world was the young woman sitting on the floor in front of him.
"You played the song for him tonight?" Arthur asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Sarah nodded, wiping her eyes. "He was wandering near the kitchen doors. He looked so lost and frightened. I knelt down to ask where his parents were. The locket slipped out of my shirt... and it opened. When he heard the song, he just stopped crying. He grabbed my apron. I was trying to walk him back to the host stand when he dropped the glass."
Arthur looked at his son. For six months, doctors and therapists had told Arthur that the trauma had permanently locked the little boy's voice away. They said he might never speak again.
But a mother's love, carried through a stranger's promise, had broken the silence.
Arthur reached out and gently placed his large hand over Sarah's trembling fingers.
"You kept your promise," Arthur cried, tears finally falling freely down his handsome face. "You have no idea what you just gave me back."
The little boy, feeling the sudden warmth of his father's emotion, finally let go of Sarah's apron. He took a small step forward and wrapped his tiny arms around Arthur's neck.
"Daddy," the toddler whispered.
Arthur buried his face in his son's shoulder, sobbing openly on the floor of the luxury restaurant, completely unashamed of his grief and overwhelming joy.
Sarah watched them, her heart aching with a beautiful, bittersweet relief. She slowly began to stand up, intending to slip away to the kitchen and quietly pack her things. She was still technically fired.
