Chapter 8 - The Pathetic Bribe

"No! No, please!" the businessman shrieked wildly, completely abandoning his sophisticated corporate persona.
He looked like a pathetic, cornered animal. He fell to his knees on the carpeted aisle right next to Margaret's white sneakers, completely ignoring his expensive gray suit.
"Please, General!" the businessman sobbed violently, tears of pure, unadulterated terror ruining his face. "Tell him to let me stay! I have to be in London! If I miss this flight, my company will lose a fifty-million-dollar merger! I'll be completely ruined! I'll be bankrupt!"
Margaret looked down at the weeping, pathetic monster. She didn't yell. Her quietness was infinitely more terrifying.
"I'll pay you!" the businessman wailed hysterically, reaching frantically for his leather briefcase. "I'll write you a check for ten thousand dollars right now! Just tell the pilot you forgive me! Please!"
A tight close-up captured Margaret's face. The beautiful mother looked at the arrogant millionaire with profound, unfiltered pity.
"You think money can buy character," Margaret whispered coldly, entirely devoid of human mercy. "You think you can violently humiliate a mother in front of her child, and then write a check to make it disappear."
Margaret gently placed her hands over little Poppy's ears to protect her from the screaming man.
