Chapter 2 - The Starving Child

The cinematic tension near the front door was absolutely suffocating.
The mother didn't scream or argue. She tightened her grip on her daughter’s hand, her face pale with exhaustion and deep, profound humiliation. She had lost her husband six months ago, and they had been evicted from their apartment that morning. They were starving, freezing, and completely out of options.
A tight close-up captured the little six-year-old girl in the yellow raincoat.
She wasn't looking at the arrogant waitress. She was looking longingly at a steaming, delicious bowl of pasta resting on a nearby serving counter. Her small hands clutched her mother’s wet coat, her innocent eyes welling with heavy, hungry tears.
"Please," the little girl whispered, her tiny voice cracking with desperation. "Just one bowl. We can share it."
The waitress rolled her eyes, entirely devoid of human empathy. She stepped forward, physically placing her hands on the mother’s wet shoulders to shove her back out into the freezing storm.
The mother and daughter dropped to their knees on the polished floor, weeping and pleading for just a single scrap of food to survive the night.
