Chapter 1 - The Frozen Threshold

The heavy white front door of the luxurious suburban mansion burst open with a violently explosive crash, shattering the quiet, expensive peace of the living room.
A brutal, freezing winter blizzard howled outside in the darkness. Stepping through the threshold was Arthur, a distinguished man in his late sixties with silver-grey hair and a neatly trimmed beard. He wore a long, imposing dark grey overcoat over a tailored dark blue suit, his hands clad in thick black leather gloves.
But it wasn't the sudden intrusion that made the scene so horrifying. It was what he was carrying.
Tucked desperately against Arthur’s chest was four-year-old Lily. The tiny toddler was shivering uncontrollably, wearing nothing but a thin white ruffled dress and a light pink cardigan. Snowflakes clung to her brown hair, melting against her pale, freezing cheeks. She was entirely barefoot, her small toes blue from the sub-zero temperatures.
Arthur’s chest heaved with a sheer, apocalyptic rage that seemed to instantly suck all the warmth out of the room. He glared at the center of the living room, his cinematic, slow eye movement locking onto the two people lounging comfortably by the fireplace.
