Chapter 3 - The Replacement

Arthur gently set Lily down on the plush, warm rug just inside the foyer.

The little girl was sobbing, thick tears streaming down her pale, freezing face, snowflakes still melting in her messy brown hair. She hugged her small arms tightly around her pink cardigan, her tiny body trembling violently from the exposure.

Arthur knelt down, pulling off his black leather gloves to gently rub the warmth back into her freezing hands. "It's okay, sweetheart. Grandpa's here. I've got you."

Lily sniffled, looking past her grandfather’s shoulder. She raised a small, shaking finger, pointing directly at Mark and the blonde woman lounging on the white couch.

"Grandpa," Lily cried, her innocent, broken voice cutting through the heavy tension of the room. "He locked the door. He said she would replace Mommy."

Arthur froze. His hands stopped moving. The cinematic realism of the moment was heavy, agonizing, and profoundly quiet.

His daughter, Sarah, was currently lying in a sterile hospital bed halfway across the city, recovering from a brutal, near-fatal car accident. Mark had promised to take care of their daughter and manage the estate while Sarah fought for her life. Instead, the very same night his wife went into surgery, Mark had moved his mistress into her home, poured her expensive whiskey, and locked his own freezing child outside in a blizzard just so they wouldn't be interrupted.

Arthur slowly stood up. The distinguished grandfather completely evaporated. Only the executioner remained.

👉 Mark rolled his eyes at the crying child, completely unaware that he was about to get physically dismantled.
