Chapter 9 - The Safe Haven

The chaotic, violent energy finally evaporated from the luxurious living room.
Arthur let out a long, heavy breath, the intense, terrifying anger leaving his broad shoulders. He walked back to the foyer, where little Lily was still sitting on the warm rug, wrapped safely in a heavy wool blanket one of the guards had brought in.
Arthur dropped to his knees. The executioner completely vanished, instantly replaced by the loving, protective grandfather.
He gently picked the little girl up, holding her securely against his chest. Her shivering had finally stopped, and the tears were drying on her pale cheeks.
"Are the bad people gone, Grandpa?" Lily asked softly, resting her head against his dark blue suit.
"They're gone forever, sweetheart," Arthur whispered, kissing her forehead tenderly. "They will never, ever come back to this house. You and Mommy are safe now."

Lily offered a tiny, exhausted smile, closing her eyes as she finally felt truly secure. Arthur carried her toward the back of the house, leaving the shattered whiskey glass on the floor as the only remaining evidence that Mark had ever existed in their lives.
👉 The storm raged outside, but inside the mansion, the true family was preparing for a brilliant, untainted future.
