Chapter 2 - The Stolen Home

To understand the sheer magnitude of the betrayal on the porch, the clock had to turn back exactly six months.
When Rosalind’s husband of forty years passed away, she was entirely broken by grief. Carter, her only son, had suggested that he and his new wife, Yvette, move into Rosalind’s sprawling, fully paid-off family home to "help her cope." Rosalind had eagerly agreed, desperately craving the warmth of family.
But the moment Yvette stepped her brown designer boots through the front door, the warmth completely vanished.
Yvette didn't want to comfort a grieving widow. She wanted a free mansion.
Within two weeks, Yvette had forcefully moved Rosalind out of the beautiful master bedroom and shoved her into the drafty, freezing sunroom at the back of the house. Yvette claimed she needed the massive walk-in closets for her "influencer wardrobe." When winter hit, Yvette deliberately kept the thermostat locked, forcing the sixty-year-old woman to sleep in her green sweater just to keep from freezing to death.
Carter did absolutely nothing. He was entirely whipped by his demanding wife, turning a blind eye to his own mother’s suffering.
Rosalind endured the cruelty in silence, believing she had no other choice. She thought this was the only way to keep her son in her life. She scrubbed the floors, cooked the meals, and stayed out of sight, treated like a minimum-wage servant in the very house she and her late husband had built from the ground up.
