Chapter 3 - The First-Class Tickets

The nightmare escalated three weeks before Christmas.

Rosalind was in the kitchen, silently washing the breakfast dishes, when she overheard Yvette talking loudly on her phone in the living room. Yvette was bragging to one of her high-society friends, her voice dripping with arrogant vanity.

"Oh, it's going to be absolutely perfect," Yvette laughed into the phone. "First-class flights to Switzerland. A private five-star ski chalet in Zermatt for two entire weeks. We are going to have a magical Christmas in the Alps!"

Rosalind paused, the soapy sponge freezing in her hands.

Carter worked as a mid-level manager at a logistics firm. Yvette didn't work at all. Rosalind knew exactly how much money her son made, and she knew for an absolute fact that they couldn't possibly afford a fifty-thousand-dollar luxury vacation to the Swiss Alps.

"How did you get Carter to pay for it?" Yvette’s friend asked through the phone speaker.

"Carter didn't pay for it, you idiot," Yvette snickered maliciously, taking a sip of her expensive latte. "His mother did. She just doesn't know it yet. The old bat is so clueless, she hasn't checked her mail in months."

Rosalind’s blood turned to absolute, freezing ice. Her heart hammered violently against her ribs.
