Chapter 8 - The White Document

Yvette snatched the white document out of Rosalind’s hand, breathing heavily like a cornered animal.
She ripped the paper open. Her furious, arrogant eyes scanned the bold black text.
In a fraction of a second, her vicious anger completely evaporated. All the color violently drained from her flawless face. Her jaw went slack, and her eyes widened in pure, speechless shock.
It wasn't just a flight cancellation receipt.
It was a federal indictment for felony wire fraud, grand larceny, and elder financial abuse. Attached to it was a notarized eviction notice giving them exactly zero minutes to vacate the premises.
"No..." Yvette choked out, her hands shaking so violently the paper rattled in the wind. "This... this is a mistake. I didn't steal anything!"
"You forged my signature, Yvette," Rosalind stated, her voice echoing off the snowy trees. "You stole eighty thousand dollars from my dead husband's life insurance. But Mr. Sterling is a very fast lawyer. The bank reversed the wire transfer this morning. The airline refunded the tickets directly back to my personal account."
Carter peered over his wife's shoulder to read the document. His legs nearly gave out.
"Mom," Carter wept pathetically, his brown jacket suddenly looking heavy and pathetic. "I didn't know! I swear I didn't know she stole the money! Please, you can't send us to jail! I'm your son!"
Rosalind looked at the boy she had raised. Her heart broke, but her resolve was absolute steel.

"You knew," Rosalind whispered lethally. "I heard you laugh when she said you were going to turn the heat off while I slept in the sunroom. You aren't my son anymore. You are a monster."
