Chapter 3 - The Stolen Dignity

Maya’s eyes went wide with absolute, paralyzing shock. Her hand trembled violently as she looked from the bowing, lethal bodyguard down to the filthy man she had just fed for free.

Daniel looked up at her. The helpless stranger was completely gone.

"I told you," Daniel said, his voice quiet, steady, and vibrating with immense, unstoppable power. "People don't forget kindness."

Maya stumbled backward against the brick wall, her mind desperately trying to process the impossible reality. Just twenty minutes ago, Daniel had been nothing more than a victim of extreme, heartbreaking cruelty inside the diner.

An hour earlier, Daniel had walked into the warm diner simply asking for a glass of tap water to survive the freezing storm.

Greg, the diner’s manager, was a cruel, sweaty, arrogant tyrant in his forties who terrorized his staff. When Greg saw the homeless man sitting in a booth, he didn't just ask him to leave. Greg had violently grabbed Daniel by his weathered coat, dragged him across the linoleum floor, and literally kicked him out into the freezing rain.

"If I ever see your filthy face near my restaurant again, I'll break your jaw!" Greg had roared, locking the glass door.
