Chapter 5 - The Transformation

Back in the present moment, the freezing rain continued to pour over the city sidewalk.
Daniel stood up from the wet concrete. He didn't look like a frail old man anymore. He stood tall, his broad shoulders radiating absolute, untouchable authority.
He unbuttoned the filthy, weathered outer coat and let it drop to the wet pavement. Underneath the rags, he was wearing a custom-tailored, dark charcoal suit vest and a crisp, albeit damp, white dress shirt.
One of the massive bodyguards immediately stepped forward, holding a large black umbrella entirely over Maya, shielding her from the cold rain.
"You lost your job because you protected me," Daniel stated smoothly, looking at Maya’s tear-stained, shivering face with profound respect. "You lost the money you needed for your mother."
"Who... who are you?" Maya whispered breathlessly.
"My name is Daniel Vance," he replied, his voice a low, commanding rumble. "I am the CEO of Vance Commercial Holdings. We own ninety percent of the real estate in this district. Including the building you are standing in front of."
Maya stopped breathing. The air in her lungs turned to absolute ice. The man Greg had just violently kicked onto the street was the billionaire landlord of the entire city block.

"I think it's time we go back inside," Daniel whispered lethally.
