Chapter 5 - The Mortgage Trap

"You can't do that!" Linda shrieked wildly, dropping the heavy glass pitcher onto the patterned rug with a loud, frightening crash. Water splashed everywhere, but nobody cared. "We bought this penthouse! We own this property!"

The wife slowly lowered the phone, ending the call, and crossed her arms over her green cardigan. She looked at her trembling husband with absolute disgust.

"Did you really think I was stupid enough to sell my apartment and give you my life savings without securing my investment, Ryan?" the wife asked softly.

Ryan's knees physically buckled. He grabbed onto the back of the white armchair to keep from collapsing.

To understand the ultimate, multi-million-dollar trap, one had to look at the paperwork signed six months ago. When Ryan and Linda forced her to sell her pre-construction condo, the cash proceeds weren't pooled into a joint account. Because Ryan had a terrible credit score from his gambling debts, the mortgage lender had refused to approve the loan in his name.

The penthouse was bought entirely with cash from the sale of her apartment.

Her father, a brilliant real estate attorney who passed away last year, had meticulously structured the deed. The property title was registered one-hundred percent under her exclusive maiden name, in an airtight, revocable family trust.
