Chapter 1 - The Dark Hallway

The American suburban Chicago home was supposed to be a sanctuary, but in the dim, atmospheric evening lighting, it felt like a suffocating prison. The wood-paneled hallway was steeped in heavy shadows, the peeling wallpaper in the foreground mirroring the decaying, toxic reality of the family living inside.
Natalie, a thirty-something woman with long brown hair, wearing a sleek grey top and black pants, stood in the darkest corner of the corridor.
She wasn't smiling. Her face was twisted into a horrific mask of pure, unadulterated malice. She aggressively gripped the tiny, fragile arm of her eight-year-old daughter, Sophie.
Sophie, a beautiful little Caucasian girl with messy, curly red hair, wearing blue denim overalls and a light t-shirt, was shoved forcefully against the hard wooden wall. Her wide eyes were filled with absolute, paralyzing terror. She was trembling so violently that her small shoes scraped against the floorboards.
"If you tell him, he leaves us forever," Natalie hissed, her voice a harsh, venomous whisper that cut through the silence like a jagged blade. She leaned in, her grip tightening brutally on the child's bruised arm. "You keep your mouth shut, or I promise you, things will get much worse for you."
Before Sophie could even let out a whimper, the heavy deadbolt of the front door clicked loudly.
The door swung open, letting a sliver of cold Chicago street light into the oppressive house.
Jason, a hardworking man in his late thirties wearing a blue button-down shirt and worn jeans, stepped inside. He was carrying a heavy black suitcase, completely exhausted from a grueling, week-long business trip.

Instantly, Natalie released her violent grip. She took a step back, casually leaning against the peeling wall, her terrifying scowl vanishing in a microsecond, violently replaced by a flawless, sickeningly sweet smile of fake innocence.
👉 Jason walked inside, entirely oblivious to the apocalyptic nightmare unfolding in his own home.
