Chapter 4 - The Vicious Gaslighting

The heavy, suffocating silence that followed Sophie's broken whisper was absolutely deafening.

Jason stared at his daughter's trembling fingers resting in his palm. Very gently, he reached up and rolled back the sleeve of her light t-shirt. The dim hallway lighting illuminated a series of dark, brutal, and horrifyingly fresh purple bruises violently gripped into the shape of adult fingers on the child's fragile upper arm.

"You little liar!" Natalie shrieked wildly, completely abandoning her sweet, innocent persona.

She lunged forward, desperately trying to grab Sophie's other arm to rip her away from Jason. "She's making it up, Jason! I grabbed her to stop her from falling down the stairs! She has a behavioral problem! She lies for attention!"

Jason moved with blinding, effortless violence.

He didn't strike his wife. He simply stood up, his towering, broad frame completely shielding his terrified daughter, and aggressively shoved Natalie backward with a single, unyielding stiff-arm.

"Do not touch her," Jason commanded. His voice wasn't a yell. It was a freezing, lethal frequency that promised absolutely nothing but pure, unadulterated destruction.

Natalie physically staggered backward, hitting the wood-paneled wall. The color violently drained from her face. She had never seen her calm, hardworking husband look like this. The exhaustion was completely gone from his eyes, replaced by a cold, demonic fury.

Jason didn't argue with her. He didn't demand an explanation. He slowly reached down, gently scooped his sobbing eight-year-old daughter into his strong arms, and pressed her face securely into his shoulder so she wouldn't have to look at the monster standing in the hallway.

"We are going to the hospital," Jason stated clinically, grabbing his car keys from the entry table.

👉 Natalie screamed that he was overreacting, entirely oblivious to the apocalyptic medical evidence that was about to seal her doom.
