Chapter 2 - The Silent Terror

"I'm home," Jason sighed, his voice thick with exhaustion as he closed the heavy front door behind him.

He had spent the entire week sleeping in cheap hotel rooms and working fourteen-hour days, entirely driven by the desire to provide a beautiful, comfortable life for his wife and daughter. All he wanted was a warm hug from his little girl and a quiet evening with his family.

But the energy in the dark hallway was completely, suffocatingly wrong.

The moment the front door had opened, Sophie didn't run to greet him. Instead, the terrified eight-year-old darted desperately behind the peeling foreground wall. She pressed her small back against the plaster, violently sliding down to the floor. She aggressively covered her own mouth with both of her trembling hands, crying completely silently in sheer, unadulterated terror, terrified that making a single sound would trigger her mother's wrath.

Jason stood in the entryway. He dropped his heavy black suitcase onto the hardwood floor with a loud, echoing thud.

He didn't take his coat off. He didn't walk toward the kitchen. A tight, painful knot formed instantly in his gut. He was a deeply observant man, and he could feel the cold, unnatural tension radiating through the dim hallway.

He looked past his smiling wife and saw a tiny sliver of blue denim trembling behind the corner of the wall.

Jason frowned, his paternal instincts completely overriding his physical exhaustion. His eyes narrowed, instantly sensing the heavy, suffocating fear poisoning the air of his own house.

"Sophie?" Jason called out, his voice tense but incredibly steady. "What happened?"
