Chapter 1 - The Broken Doll

The bright, sterile lights of the pediatric ward reflected off the white linoleum floor. In the center of the bustling hospital room, seven-year-old Lily sat small and fragile in her oversized hospital gown. Her medical bed was surrounded by blurred, silently beeping monitors. She didn't look at the expensive medical equipment, nor did she look at the team of prestigious doctors conducting rounds in the background.

All of Lily’s attention was completely focused on the worn, torn rag doll resting in her lap. The doll's yarn hair was falling out, and its left arm was hanging by a single thread.

Standing beside the bed was Maya, a young nurse in her 20s with her blonde hair pulled into a neat bun, wearing crisp blue scrubs. Maya had just checked Lily’s vitals. As she reached for the chart, Lily gently grabbed Maya’s sleeve.

Lily looked up, her large, terrified eyes filled with a desperate, pleading hope. She slowly held the broken rag doll out to the nurse.

"Can you fix her?" Lily whispered, her voice trembling in the quiet room.

Maya smiled kindly, her heart breaking for the little girl who had been brought into the ER alone the night before. "Let me see," Maya said softly, gently taking the fragile doll from the child's hands.
