Chapter 2 - The Hidden Tag
Maya held the doll delicately, examining the torn fabric near its shoulder. It was clearly a homemade toy, stitched together with mismatched buttons and rough cloth. But as Maya turned the doll over in her hands, her fingers brushed against something stiff hidden beneath the collar of the doll’s faded dress.
It wasn't a standard manufacturer’s tag. It was a thick, laminated piece of paper, carefully hand-sewn into the seam so it couldn't be easily ripped off.
Maya gently folded the collar back to read the faded ink.
In a fraction of a second, Maya froze completely. Her kind, reassuring smile vanished instantly. The color violently drained from her face, leaving her looking as pale as the hospital sheets. She stopped breathing, her blue eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing horror.
Standing in the background, a few feet away, were Dr. Aris and Dr. Vance—the two senior surgeons who had just authorized Lily’s emergency heart procedure. They were discussing the lucrative insurance payout for the surgery, completely ignoring the child.
Maya looked from the hidden tag to the two doctors, her hands shaking so violently she almost dropped the doll.
