Chapter 4 - The Gasp
Dr. Aris snatched the doll from Maya, his face flushing red with anger at her insubordination. "You are completely out of line, Nurse! I will have you suspended for this!"
He aggressively flipped the doll over, fully intending to throw it in the trash. But his eyes caught the laminated tag sewn into the collar. He squinted at the faded ink.
The silence in the bright hospital room became absolute. The rhythmic beeping of the monitors seemed to slow down.
Dr. Aris stopped breathing. His jaw dropped. The arrogant, untouchable surgeon let out a loud, visceral gasp of pure terror. He stumbled backward, his back hitting the medical cart with a loud crash. The doll slipped from his trembling hands, landing on the linoleum floor.
Dr. Vance rushed forward, picking up the doll to see what had terrified his colleague.
The tag wasn't a name. It was a desperate, terrifying warning written by a mother who knew she was going to die.
