Chapter 2 - The Collapsed Smile

The sharp, heavy thud of the ink stamp pressing forcefully onto the signature line of the legal document echoed like a gunshot in the quiet bedroom.

Brenda snapped her head toward the doorway.

The greedy, victorious smile that had just been plastered across her face instantly collapsed into sheer, suffocating panic. Her realistic facial micro-expressions shifted from arrogant entitlement to absolute terror as she realized her father had just walked in. Frank wasn't supposed to be home from his golf club for another three hours.

She quickly released her mother’s hand. Florence’s arm fell back onto the mattress, entirely lifeless and limp against the pink silk pajamas.

Brenda scrambled to cover the document, her chest heaving under her white dress. She forced a bright, painfully fake smile onto her face, trying to project the image of a caring, devoted child.

"Dad... I was just helping her," Brenda stammered, her voice shaking with nervous, frantic energy. "Mom wanted to make sure the estate paperwork was finalized today. She was just so tired, so I was helping her use her signature stamp. You know how her arthritis gets."

Frank didn't move from the doorway. His initial shock was rapidly vanishing, replaced by a cold, dark, and calculating fury. He looked at his wife's completely motionless body, then slowly shifted his slow eye movement back to his daughter.
