Chapter 3 - The Tainted Tea

Brenda swallowed hard, taking a slow step away from the glass table. She smoothed down the sweetheart neckline of her elegant white dress, desperately trying to maintain her composure.
"She's not comatose, Dad, she's just taking a heavy nap," Brenda argued, her voice pitching up defensively. "The doctors said she needs her rest. You're overreacting. I'm the only one in this family who actually steps up to handle the difficult financial burdens. You should be thanking me for taking the initiative."
Frank took a slow, deliberate step fully into the room. The cinematic realism of the moment was palpable; the air in the luxurious bedroom felt completely toxic.
"Taking the initiative?" Frank repeated, his dark suit shifting as he walked toward the bedside table. "Is that what you call crushing up six prescribed sedatives and mixing them into her chamomile tea this afternoon?"
All the remaining color drained from Brenda’s cheeks. Her jaw actually dropped.
"I saw the white powder residue on the kitchen counter, Brenda," Frank continued, his eyes burning with absolute, protective rage. "I saw the empty blister pack in the trash. You drugged your own mother so you could forge a power-of-attorney document and steal the estate while I was out of the house."
Brenda’s back hit the edge of the large tufted headboard. She realized the innocent caregiver act was completely dead. There was no talking her way out of the poisoned tea.
