Chapter 8 - The Awakening

Brenda launched herself across the bedroom, her hands clawing desperately for the blue passbook. But Frank easily side-stepped her frantic attack. Brenda stumbled in her high heels, crashing hard into the side of the large tufted headboard.
"Give it to me!" Brenda screamed, completely losing her mind. "It's my birthright! I deserve it!"
"You deserve a prison cell."
The voice did not belong to Frank. It was weak, raspy, but laced with an absolute, terrifying authority.
Brenda froze. The blood in her veins turned to absolute ice. She slowly, mechanically turned her head toward the mattress.
Lying in the pink silk pajamas, Florence slowly opened her eyes.
The mother wasn't unconscious. She hadn't been comatose. Florence pushed herself up against the tufted headboard, looking at her daughter with an expression of profound, devastating heartbreak and icy resolve.
"Mom..." Brenda choked out, stumbling backward until she hit the glass table. "You... you were asleep! You drank the tea!"
"Your father smelled the chalky residue in the cup before he brought it upstairs to me," Florence rasped, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "We poured it down the sink. We wanted to see exactly how far you would go. We laid here and waited to see if our only daughter was truly a monster."
